"Three Months" was the time between my mom's late stage lung cancer diagnosis and when she passed away. It was a very intense three months, but I hope my story and my faith can help you in some ways.

Here are a few of the things I learned when I took care of mom.  If you have any other suggestions, please feel free to share them in the comments section.

 Tips for Caregivers

1.  Manage Your Expectations

Being a caregiver is a huge task. It is going to require a lot of work, but you can do it!  Don’t expect perfection, but seek encouragement on your journey.

2.   Ask for help and support

It is never too early or late to ask for help and support.  It is beneficial to create a support network. Delegate tasks others can help you with to help lighten the load: meal prep, laundry, grocery runs, and eventually perhaps some lifting work when needed. Most people are willing to help if they are able to, sometimes they just don’t know where to start. It’s helpful to have specific tasks people can sign up for. If you’re a person of faith, don’t feel ashamed to ask for prayers. Join support groups if it’s something you’re open to.

3.   Acquire a planner

Whether it’s the traditional type or a digital one, it will be helpful to keep track of doctor’s appointments, doctor and clinic contacts, list of medications (which may be adjusted), support service contacts and finally, if you’re the writing type, keeping a journal may be a form of emotional outlet.

4.    Consider legal issues

Medical power of attorney and estate planning are issues that may need to be taken care of.

5.     Communicate with doctors

If you’re researching on the condition of your loved one, make sure to consider the sources carefully. Doctors are often also open to discussion regarding patient care plan.

6.   **** I cannot stress this enough *****  SELF CARE!!!

Be sure to take breaks, both mental and physical ones. Have a friend come in to be with your loved one while you go out to grab a coffee or tea or dessert from your favorite place. Sneak in some hobby time once a week. Find a friend you can confide in, or pray with and share your feelings if needed (can share feelings without disclosing medical information or violating privacy). Take good care of yourself.
